Description

Glucosamine is an amino monosaccharide synthesized endogenously in humans and animals from glucose and glutamine, which is then converted to N-acetylglucosamine.

Where does N-acetylglucosamine come from? How is it produced?
In the case of our supplement, it is naturally obtained by extraction from chitin obtained from marine invertebrates (shells of shrimp, lobsters, crabs, etc.). It is an organic material with astonishing physical and chemical properties.

Enzymes are then used to hydrolyze (i.e., split) the molecule into multiple parts. Several organisms contain this type of enzyme, called chitinase (1), which is involved in various functions (2). When the enzymes have completely digested the chitin molecule, N-acetylglucosamine is obtained (3).

The mechanisms of action are the subject of research: hundreds of scientific studies are published every year, but none can be cited under current European regulations.

Almost 90% of orally ingested glucosamine is absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract. Glucosamine is known to easily cross biological barriers in the body, except in the stomach, where its polar shape prevents it from flowing through cell membranes.

After the initial liver passage, it is then distributed to various biological structures in the body. The metabolized portion is then found in the carbon dioxide in exhaled air.
