Cartilage is a connective tissue whose primary purpose is to support and resist the sliding and impact that normally occurs at the joint ends of bones during movement.

Cartilage contains chondrocytes (vital cells) and various types of structural proteins, in varying quantities depending on the type of cartilage.

In fact, based on their different composition, we can classify it into three different types:

Hyaline cartilage: This is the most common type in the body. It is found on all major joint surfaces and in the ribs, nose, trachea, bronchi, and larynx.
Elastic cartilage: As the name suggests, this is the most elastic type. It is found in the auricle and epiglottis, for example.
Fibrous cartilage: It is widespread in specific joints such as the intervertebral discs, knee menisci, and pubic symphysis.
A fundamental structure, but with a characteristic that makes it unique compared to all other structures in the body: it is not vascularized.

This aspect is very important because it means that cartilage has difficulty accessing nutrients and is simultaneously subject to the accumulation of toxins.

Another characteristic of cartilage is its water content: 65-80% of cartilage weight is water.

Most often, cartilage problems are caused by wear and tear and tend to appear after age 40.

Articular cartilage lesions are very often associated with other joint pathologies. A study[1] of 200 cases found that isolated lesions were present in 6.5% of cases, while in 61.5% they were accompanied by other lesions.
